Andrew Koppel, son of TV newsman Ted Koppel, was found dead in an apartment yesterday in New York. I think it is really sad that people die so young nowadays. This man could have had such a bright future. More details forthcoming here as news reports about Koppel's death surface.
Get Rick Quick?? Maybe the Long Haul is Better...
Ever wondered how to invest and actually make money at it? The stock market can be a fun place to play if you know what you are doing... but can be disastrous if you don't. Playing with fire comes to mind. The flame-eating act at the local circus can do it all day long and not get hurt, while little children are injured easily. Knowing what you are doing before you start is definitely the way to go when it comes to investing your hard earned money.
It pays to spend some time doing things on paper before you start. If you don't know the New York Stock Exchange from the NASDAQ (there is a difference) then you need to do your homework. Take some time to look over a financial site like Yahoo Finance and pick a few companies... any companies will do. Research them and see if you think you would want to invest in them. Give yourself a virtual account on paper... say $5000; and then track on paper what the result would be if you invested in those companies you have chosen. Track how the stocks do weekly, and keep records in your virtual portfolio. Don't invest with real money until you've got your virtual skills honed. Read. Educate yourself. There are a lot of sites on the Internet that will give you the information you need... even groups doing just what I've outlined here (in a very basic sense) and once you have the research skills down, then you can start to think about buying real stock.
Doing things yourself can be scary, but in this day and age, when the New York Times is STILL talking about Goldman Sachs, and how they knowingly defrauded investors, I'd frankly rather learn how to buy stocks without a broker and do it myself than trust a big firm with my hard earned money.
An apple a day to keep the doctor away??
With the rising health crises in the US, and truly, across the globe, many are wondering what we can do to live better and live longer. What if it was as simple as changing the way you eat?
The old adage "You are what you eat" really does have some merit. Doctors and health professionals the world over are finding that those who eat well live longer and have better quality of life, whether it is in the Himalayas, or in a town in Wisconsin, in the United States. What is eating well though?
Take the case of Barbara Stitt, the wife of the founder of Natural Ovens Bakery in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Barbara was the Chief Probation Officer for Ohio from 1963 until 1982 and she began to institute a reform to change the way our adolescents eat... taking the junk out of schools and offering wholesome organic foods instead. In a 5 year study in Appleton, Wisconsin, the effects were profound. Instead of the high cost of vandalism, they had wholesome foods, and offered classes in nutrition. Violence, expulsions, drug abuse and weapons violations all went down, while mental health improved.
With sites like the Health Ranger, Healthy Secrets and Mercola.com telling the average people that they need to be eating better, more people are taking control of the way they eat and the effect it has on their health. Some are even making a career out of helping others to eat better. The need for nutritionists and dieticians is growing, and according to the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the pace of those wanting to become a dietician is only holding steady... which means it won't meet that demand. If we are going to change the way our health is going, we are going to need to educate ourselves, and educate others in right eating habits. To do that, we need to first choose to learn... so before you pick up that burger and fries, pick up your mouse and do some research on nutrition and the effect it has on your health... maybe even become a dietician or nutritionist with an eye on healthy eating and the long term effects on health... your children just might thank you for it when they come to visit at your HOME instead of the nursing home. =)

Well, I have to admit, when I saw these little furry creatures last year I knew they would be big. Told people to just watch... they won't stop at hamsters. Was I right or was I right?? Not gloating, just sayin'. =D
Zhu Zhu Pets are here to stay... that is for sure. I was reminded of Webkins when I first saw them, but quickly realized these would be oh, so much bigger. From the point of someone who writes about products on the web, I could spend all my time on just Zhu Zhu Pets right now. Hehe. If you have had your head in the sand and haven't yet heard of these little toys, they are fuzzy electronic animals that have a habitat which they actually "learn". They sleep when in the sleeping area, and eat in the eating area... just like a real pet would. From a parent's point of view, no mess, no smell, and they don't die and disappoint your child. For a child, they are wonderous. If that isn't enough to convince you, they just won three awards at the American International Toy Fair in New York... Toy of the Year, Girl Toy of the Year and Innovative Toy of the Year. Very nice.
And we now have, in addition to accessories and clothes, new animals... including Racoons, Squirrels, Bunnies, and even Skunks! They are not the run of the mill pets, that's for sure. I'm really interested to watch and see how this develops. The makers of Zhu Zhu Pets, Cepia, have said that the brand will continue to grow and even branch into related products, such as Zhu Zhu Pets Coloring Books. We are in for a long, fun-filled ride here... mark my words.Mahalo's got all the Super Bowl commericals! www.mahalo.com #superbowl
Who doesn't like to sit around leafing through the latest fashion or gadget catalog? Remember when you were little and the Sears Catalog or the JC Penney Catalog came out? We loved laying right on the floor and looking through the whole thing! The toys were best, of course! I still remember the way the ink smelled, and the way the pages sounded as we tried to unstick them! lol
And as we grew and had our own children, they have seen a much wider variety of catalogs come through the door. Jewelry, clothes, tools, even office supplies! Everything has a catalog nowadays... even online catalogs! There is such a wide selection... and today Mahalo announced they are adding 200 catalog pages to their site. I can't wait to see these pages!Go read the announcement... and if you are a writer, you should jump on this! They are paying for the making of the pages, then giving ongoing revenue... there's even a prize for the top three who make the most pages. Very nice. =D Mahalo's Catalog ContestThis year promises to bring great bargains during the year end sales at many retailers. After Christmas Sales allow both the retailer and the consumer to benefit. With the slow economy, pre-Christmas sales have been down, and it looks like retailers are hoping to make up for it after the holidays.
All the big retailers are offering deep discounts; some more than others. Best Buy is giving an extra discount on already marked down items, including HDTV's, and Target and JC Penny are opening their doors at very early hours, while Macy's has a special coupon that can only be used until 1pm on December 26. Wanna know more? Check here for more of the best after Christmas sales... new information added regularly.
